AoS Summer League Blog 3: Look, a wild card!
We are 2 rounds down and the league is (sort of) starting to shape up.
August apparently is the month of the wild card, with around half of us tweaking something for round 3.
Before we get into that however, let’s have a look back at the results from Round 2.
Mark (LRL) vs Pete (Seraphon)
Prediction: Mark win
Result: Mark win
Pete published his master plan for playing this mission a few weeks before his game, then duly ignored his own plan for the game and ended up getting picked off by Mark. Only 4 points in it, mind!
Alden (CoS) vs Callum (Chorfs)
Prediction: Alden win
Result: Alden win
This was about as brutal as one would expect, luckily the boys were able to play at home rather than go out for an hour then come home again.
Tom (BoK) vs Leo (Skaven)
Prediction: Leo win
Result: Leo win
A solid victory for Leo who has taken so many scalps in succession he’s starting to feel bad about it.
Steve (Seraphon) vs Jamie (DoK)
Prediction: Steve win
Result: Jamie win
Steve learned he should probably hold some circles after this game in order to win more games.
Ross (BoK) vs Andy (SBGL)
Prediction: Andy win
Result: Ross win
Ross’ summary of this game was ‘we found out 20 Bloodletters vs 40 zombies is fun for no-one involved.’ Turns out all you need to do is not be moved off circles to win games of warhammer, who knew?
Me (FEC) vs Dan (SBGL)
Prediction: Dan win
Result: Craig win
A classic case of bet against myself to make a win happen, and it worked! This was a pretty brutal game for Dan in terms of stuff getting killed, but he still managed to score a very respectable amount of points.
Round 3 Mission: What’s Yours is Ours
This promises to be an absolute shit show of a mission and I can’t wait for it. Steve and Alden played a practice game, one hated it and one loved it which sounds like perfection to me.
We have a Spearhead board-sized space in the middle of the board, which could be untouchable by anything for potentially the whole 5 rounds which is pretty wild.
There could be a few games in which armies are just running in circles around the map, or brawling in a very small corner!

Predictions:
Mark (LRL) vs Dan (SBGL)
This is going to be fun, because I have absolutely no idea how any of these games are going to play, so my predictions are going to be more akin to putting a finger in the air and seeing which way the wind(chargers) blows.
I think Mark’s mobility will be useful for getting around those board edges, whereas Dan’s skellies are a little slow and might be hard to bring the boney blobs to bear.
However, if Dan becomes the underdog and can open up the middle area he might be able to make his numbers count. Honestly though, who knows.
Prediction: Mark to win
Jamie (DoK) vs Tom (BoK)
2 armies here who ideally want to run directly at, and take chunks out of each other at the earliest convenience.
It will be interesting to see how well the Daughters can slice through the Daemons or if they hit a bit of a red wall.
The Bloodthirster is going to pick up infantry like nobody's business, and being able to turn off Morathi’s ward could be gnarly if they go toe-to-toe.
The underdog mechanic changes everything potentially of course, so I’m going to plump for the more mobile option again.
Prediction: Jamie to win, but it’ll be close.
Alden (Cos) vs Leo (Skaven)
There are only so many ways I can say that I expect Alden to win, but ultimately his list was created in the fires of Mount Doom, and all that autism and malice has been poured into it, so I expect him to win.
Leo is probably the closest thing to his protege in this group, but I suspect Alden can make life hell for the rat boys.
I’m not sure whether the underdog mechanic benefits one more than the other, but if space is squeezed it’s going to be hard for Leo to get gnawholes down to be used.
Prediction: Alden to win
Pete (Seraphon) vs Andy (SBGL)
Pete no doubt has another grand plan for playing this mission which he won’t utilise at all.
Nagash not being able to see through the middle will definitely be a detriment to Andy’s game, I would expect fewer mortals to come Pete’s way.
I can also see some traffic jams of cavalry trying to get past each other which could end in a slap fest in one corner or t’other of the board.
I’m expecting a wild card from Pete for the next stage of his grand plan, comboing Raptadons with Kroxigor, if he can just remember his PRIMARY objective, he might have this.
One or other of these guys is going to realise his potential here and claim a win. I have no idea which one though…
Prediction: Tie game
Steve (Seraphon) vs Callum (Chorfs)
Steve’s original list has Kroaked (geddit?) and he has wild carded to a Krox-maxing one, which I think is where his heart truly lies. I’ve literally no idea if that list is a complete meme or utter genius.
Callum will make these Chorfs work if it kills him (which could go either way honestly).
This is not a great mission for shooting, or slow armies, so both armies could find the going a little tough here, I expect a low scoring game. I imagine both players would be happy for the middle area to be open for them both to do their thing.
Prediction: Callum is going to sneak it, sending Steve further down the rabbit hole of nutty lists.
Craig (FEC) vs Ross (BoK)
I’m pre-annoyed about this game, I just know Ross is going to rock up and just beat me through his uncanny ability to just do tabletop games.
In the spirit of collecting Ogors I have wild carded to do the most unga bunga list I can (short of running only dragons) so hope I can push enough damage to chew through some Daemons (unlikely based on past experience).
There is a chance I just run in a circle way from Skarbrand & co, or make each Bloodletter blob come at me one at a time.
Prediction: Ross will tell me off for not having enough confidence in myself, but he’s not my real dad. Dad Ross to win!
Catch y’all again in a few weeks
