Round 2 down, and we’ve seen the first dataslate for 11th edition. Interesting times… let’s see how the games went:
Dan (Death Guard / Purge) Vs Weir (Dark Angels / Recon):
Hands up if you hate that -1 BS and -1 to hit can stack. Thankfully a lot of this has been removed from the game now, but not Weir’s Ravenwing (we played the day before the slate, but I digress). Apologies to everyone else in the league that now has to experience this. Well, maybe not the Necrons, fuck those guys.
The game was going well for me at the start – 4 infiltrating Poxwalker and Plague Marine units got in Weir’s face turn 1, and caused some initial problems. But just like a Netflix documentary structure – It was going well…UNTIL IT WASN’T.
This game came down to two factors:
1 – Weir spamming his -1 to hit strat and making life miserable for the stinky boys.
2 – Me misplaying the brick of 10 Plague Marines and doing an absolutely shit trade.
I still take the moral victory though as Weir would’ve timed out on the clock if we were playing a tournament 😉
Prediction: Me
Winner: Weir (98 to 72)

Matt (Necrons / Take and Hold) vs Jamie (Imperial Knights / Purge):
I could see it in Jamie’s face when he came over after the game… I told him not to split fire, and he didn’t….and the Necrons still didn’t die. Jamie even threatened to melt his own army down…poor fellas.
He did do better than Josh though so there’s solace in that! Necrons are just incredibly good at Take and Hold, and the tummy tickle of nerfs they got in the dataslate aren’t going to change the outcome much.
Anyway, Matt continues to be the menace of League 3, and I really hope Weir gets paired into Necrons next LOL.
Prediction: Jamie
Winner: Matt (87 to 73)

Craig (Death Guard / Recon) vs Joe (Leagues of Votann / Priority Assets):
In my only correct prediction of the week, Craig bested Joe’s squats in what looked like another slog of a game. Joe is doing incredibly well considering he’s only played 2 games of 11th, 2 games with Votann, and they’ve both been against Death Guard. Looks like he took Craig to the wire just he did against me.
Joe’s dice also performed better this time, and he was able to get sustained hits off multiple times to put a dent in Craig’s zombified masses….but that’s the problem with zombified masses – there’s always more of them (well…there’s 3 more units of them but that doesn’t sound anywhere near as dramatic does it.).
Prediction: Craig
Winner: Craig (95 to 86)

Onto Round 3… Now we’re entering post-dataslate territory, lists have been changed and some have even changed dispositions. Most importantly, -2 to hit isn’t as easily accessible as it was before….oh wait.
Fixtures:
Matt (Necrons /Take and Hold) vs Weir (Dark Angels/Recon)
Craig (Death Guard/Recon) vs Dan (Death Guard/Take and Hold)
Jamie (Imperial Knights /Purge) vs Josh (Chaos Knights/Take and Hold)
Joe – BYE
Matt vs Weir:

I’m tempted to just leave it there tbh.
As much as Weir hates this matchup, I think he’ll do well. Dark Angels Ravenwing actually caught buffs in the dataslate (WHY????), and I’m sure Weir will take advantage of that by fielding a big Sammael bike murder brick to launch at the unkillable robot masses. Necrons got a tummy tickle as usual, so Matt’s list hasn’t changed much (if at all?), so his tactics will most likely be the same – refuse to die then absolutely murk shit on the clapback. I think this is going to be long battle of attrition, and wouldn’t be surprised if Lisa is champing at the bit at 22:30 waiting for this one to finally be over…
Prediction: Fuck it, DRAW

Craig vs Dan:
Ooooo it’s a mirror match! I guess that means me and Craig are going to end up having a scrap in the car park afterwards, so everyone remember to bring your cameras and have the Jack Rossel on standby in case things get too ugly.

This will be Craig and I’s 3rd mirror match, and we each hold one victory…so this one is going to be for more than just league points.
I’ve changed my list and disposition because Death Guard just don’t seem to have the killing output to successfully get wins with Purge. Ironically Champions of Contagion (combined with Paragons of Putrescence) is far more killy than Morty’s Hammer, but Take and Hold will now be the name of the game for the remainder of my league run.
I think this is going to be a close and drawn out slog of a game. Or as good ol’ JR would say, A SLOBBERKNOCKER. Both Craig and I know our factions very well, and Craig is particularly good at finding ways to score points in the later rounds. I think if I can make a dent in his scarier units early and then just hold on while denying his scoring with the endless chaff, then I can see this game going my way. Craig has soooooooooooooooooooo much stuff though.
Prediction: Craig

Jamie vs Josh:
Woahhhhhhhhhhh boy. Talk about slobberknockers…
It’s another mirror match of sorts, as the loyalist bigs take on the heretical bigs in a gargantuan game of rock em sock em robots. Josh, licking his wounds after Porphyriongate, has also changed from Purge to Take and Hold so this match really will be Unstoppable Force vs Immovable Object. Omg it’s Hulk Hogan vs Andre the Giant! I hope Weir is loving all of these WWE references, he’s such a WWE enjoyer.
Both guys are bringing 5 bigs, and both are bringing a Lancer…making this incredibly hard to predict. I guess this comes down to A, who has the better rules (spoilers, it’s Imperial Knights), and B, who’s dice are hotter (don’t bring the dice you used against Necrons lads).
If this is going to play out just like Hogan vs Andre, then the most likely result is that Jamie utters the immortal words, “that doesn’t work for me brother”, and proceeds to no-sell all of Josh’s attacks before delivering one final devastating leg drop for the win.
Prediction: Jamie

Joe has the BYE this week, and I’m all out of image generation credits so no picture for you mate, soz. Anyway, I expect Joe will also be looking to make some changes post-dataslate, ready to come back and score a victory for the ancestors in Round 4.
