AoS Summer League Blog 4: Big Summer Blow Out!

Oct 1
4 min read

It’s taken 84 years, but I have finally played my bye game and round 3 is complete.

The baby-shaped clock is ticking for Pete, so we need to crack on with the next 2 rounds before he goes on hiatus for an indeterminate period of time.

With that in mind, let’s recap round 3 results!

Mark (LRL) vs Dan (SBGL)

Prediction: Mark to win

Result: Dan win

Straight out of the gate with one I got completely wrong and caused Mark to drop his pointy ears entirely.

Jamie (DoK) vs Tom (BoK)

Prediction: Jamie to win

Result: Tom wins

This was a bye game as Jamie couldn’t make it, Alden cooked up a Cogfort list which Tom duly dumpstered.

Alden (CoS) vs Leo (Skaven)

Prediction: Alden to win

Result: Alden wins

You know exactly how this went.

Pete (Seraphon) vs Andy (SBGL)

Prediction: Tie game

Result: PETE WIN

He’s only gone and done it, a competitive victory for our Pete, who is on a bit of a run now.

Steve (Seraphon) vs Callum (Chorfs)

Prediction: Callum win

Result: Steve wins

Another result here which sent an opponent into despair, but yet there appears to be light at the end of the tunnel for the Chorfs with the Battlescroll this week!

Craig (FEC) vs Ross (BoK)

Prediction: Ross to win

Result:

This was another bye game which Leo kindly stepped in for as Ross remembered his secondary objective this round.

Round 4 Mission: Avalanche Of Ash

This mission appears to be demonstrating the GW writers apparent contempt for having circles on the table, with an underdog ability which requires you to make a roll for every objective on the table for it to potentially be removed and never return.

This makes for some wonky scoring which starts out normal (control 1, control 2, control more) and descends into control of terrain as said circles start to disappear.

It’s quite simple really folks, just don’t stand on any objectives and they can’t go away!

Predictions

Right, into the real meat and potatoes, predictions time.

Leo (Skaven) vs Steve (Seraphon)

Both of these 2 are going nicely with 2 wins and a loss each, and Leo doesn’t tend to lose games when he’s running a Master Moulder and eighteen Rat Ogors (plus potentially 9 to bring back).

Steve however is not lacking for hammers of his own, so I predict lots of stuff dying in this game.

The mobility of the Skaven seems suited to this mission, where objectives could be disappearing and pivoting to controlling terrain may be required. Leo has added the SoA Screaming Bell which can become a Gnawhole making potentially 4 portals to run through.

I genuinely think this mission is a crapshoot, the random objectives disappearing could hinder one player, or be completely benign and we’re just playing straight warhammer.

Prediction: Leo to continue his arc of destruction.

Alden (CoS) vs Jamie (DoK)

Another month, another victim for Alden.

Sorry, I mean this is an equal match up like any other, of course!

As above, the way the mission actually plays out could affect scoring, but Alden tends to murder everything in front of him then mopping up the scoreboard.

Both players here need to update their lists as with the recent Battlescroll their lists have gone anywhere from a little over to way over 2000 points.

Prediction: Alden still has enough of those stupid horses to get the job done.

Ross (BoK) vs Dan (SBGL)

We’ll see if Ross can make himself available for this one, he needs to remember his secondary objective to podium in the AoS league.

Dan has scored well so far across his games, and Ross has won the one game he turned up for.

Whilst the primary part of this mission has the potential to skew the scoring, Ross’s list is wound-dense and has 2 big smashy Greater Daemons. I think Dan will need to mitigate the damage they can do, and see who can out-tarpit the other with their infantry.

Prediction: Ross probably rocks up and wins because that’s what he does (come on Dan!)

Tom (BoK) vs Callum (Chorfs)

This match is the first of BCP appearing to be completely drunk at the helm, pairing Tom (2nd in the standings) with Callum (9th at time of writing).

Callum was very down on his Chorfs after the last round, but since then GW have been listening and reworked the Chorf detachments enabling crit (2 hits) on his shooting based on Daemonic Power points. This is a pretty huge buff to shooting output and I’m really interested to see if it enables him to carve more of us up at range.

The only downside is Tom has a silly amount of red lads, with lots of wounds and ward saves that Callum’s shooting needs to slice through to have a chance of not getting swarmed.

Tom already has 2 wins so far in his debut outing so should not be underestimated.

Prediction: Low scoring game, but I think Tom might have the OC to tarpit and swing primary in his favour.

Pete (Seraphon) vs Craig (FEC)

The match up Pete and I have been hoping for, but ultimately the 2nd quite wonky pairing from BCP this round, with 4th vs 8th taking each other on.

I’ve not played his Dinos with FEC yet so am really looking forward to this one.

If you looked at my list you might be forgiven for thinking that I’d tailored it specifically to murder Pete, 2x Horrors bricks with their anti-cavalry rend and mortals on 3+s makes Aggradons very nice eating targets for them. Cryptguard and Ushoran also don’t mind taking a charge either.

That said, Pete has finally found success and has lots of reps with essentially the same list, so I’m not taking anything for granted.

I think this will probably be a high scoring game as we’re both fast and have plenty of recursion to bring stuff back in useful spots.

Prediction: I have a sneaking suspicion that Pete is going to win this one and then dine out on it for months whilst he’s on parental leave.

Andy (SBGL) vs ?

Andy has a bye week as Mark has dropped from the league, so we will await his opponent to see what Andy can score here.

Catch you in a month!
